Passing on knowledge

Mike is a patient and inspiring teacher and enjoys passing on his knowledge and skills to others. We offer short courses in our pleasant rural surroundings for either individuals or small groups. These can cover anything from the basics of woodworking through to more complex aspects of cabinet making.

Students get their own bench, tools and materials for the course project with max 3 people on group course so you get plenty of attention.  We also provide you with a sandwich lunch on both days along with tea, coffee and Jane’s worldbeating  home made cake!  All this for an inclusive fee of £325.

The beginners course will introduce basic joints and use of the tools by working through a project to build a child’s stool.  We’ll also talk about characteristics of wood and give advice on which tools to get you started in setting up your own workshop at home.

The intermediate course is an ideal follow on which will cover carcassing techniques needed to make a small spice rack which can be finished on the course or by taking it away with you.  We’ll also take a closer look at some of the workshop equipment including how to operate it safely.

The progressive course completes our series of standard courses and introduces further more advanced skills through our project-based teaching technique.  On this course students will make a tea tray featuring dovetailed corners.

After these three courses, you will have a good suite of skills enabling you to go on and build your own projects which you may have felt beyond you in the past.

Bespoke courses can be arranged on a one to one or small group basis to guide you through particular skills that you want to acquire or assisting you with a specific project that you have in mind.  Contact us to discuss what you have in mind and we will be happy to arrange it for you.

Here’s what our students say:

“I just wanted to thank you for organising and teaching such a wonderful weekend.”

Mary, Aberdeen

“A heartfelt thank you for another wonderful weekend of woodwork . It’s the careful attention that you always give to our individual ways of learning and existing skill base that make it such a great environment in which to learn and progress.”

Gavin, Turriff

“A warm, welcoming workshop and a great introduction to the basics of woodwork. I now feel I could start a simple project for myself.”

James, Edinburgh

“Two whole days of being spoilt, it was back to reality this morning with a bump, cold office and instant coffee. Yuk!”

Alistair, Knock

“I attended Mike’s Progressive Course and was fortunate (for me) to be only attendee. This meant I had Mike’s undivided attention over the two day course. Rather than concentrating on a piece of work we ranged the various hand and power tools in the shop , discussing the techniques to gain maximum benefit form careful set up, use of jigs etc.  It was just what I wanted, to allow me to advance with confidence in my own home workshop.”

Les, Fochabers
