COURSES

Passing on knowledge

Mike is a patient and inspiring teacher and enjoys passing on his knowledge and skills to others. We offer a series of three weekend courses in our beautiful rural surroundings for either individuals or small groups. These are very practical and are all based on a project which teaches a range of skills and at the end of the course you will have a completed piece to take away with you.

Students get their own bench, tools and materials for the course project are there is a maximum of 3 people on each course which means you will get plenty of individual attention.  We also provide you with a light lunch on both days along with tea, coffee and Jane’s world-beating home made cake!

The beginners course will introduce basic joints and use of the tools by working through a project to build a child’s stool.  We’ll also talk about characteristics of wood and give advice on which tools to get you started in setting up your own workshop at home.

The intermediate course will cover carcass-building techniques and some basic cabinetry work needed to make a small spice rack. We’ll also take a closer look at some of the workshop equipment including how to operate it safely.

The progressive course introduces more advanced skills through our project-based teaching technique.  On this course students will make a tea tray featuring dovetailed corners.

After these three courses, you will have a good suite of skills enabling you to go on and build your own projects which you may have felt beyond you in the past.

The cost per course is £295

Here’s what our students say:

“A most enjoyable two days of learning and fun in really good company and in a great setting. Mike happily shares his knowledge and expertise, and I learned more broadly about the tools and techniques as we worked our way through the project. I was also taken by the ethos of what he is doing through his own work and business. It deserves to be supported. A memorable weekend. “

Matt, Banchory

“I have always been interested in wood as a material but never progressed beyond novice DIY. I was therefore delighted when my partner bought me Mike`s weekend Beginners Course as a present. Mike is an experienced teacher with a relaxed style but very knowledgeable and happy to pass on his experience to others from choosing pieces of wood to how to use basic hand tools. Everything was conducted in a Covid safe environment with my own workbench and all my own tools and something tangible to make and take away.”

Tony, Aberdeen

“I just wanted to thank you for organising and teaching such a wonderful weekend.”

Mary, Aberdeen

“A heartfelt thank you for another wonderful weekend of woodwork . It’s the careful attention that you always give to our individual ways of learning and existing skill base that make it such a great environment in which to learn and progress.”

Gavin, Turriff
